「位置決め」と訳す場合
医療機器分野の特許明細書を読んでいるとよく出会う英単語が、"positioning"や"position"です。"position"の意味はたくさんありますが、今回は、医療機器分野で考察しました。
患者体内でのステントやカテーテルの「位置決め」、画像診断機器の「位置決め」などです。"positioning"→「位置決め」や、"position"→「位置決めする」「配置する」（動詞）、「位置」「配置」「設置」（名詞）と訳します。
機械関係や建築関係でもよく出てきますね。
まず、英英辞典での定義です。

「位置決め」と訳すことが多かったのですが、ここで「位置付け」という単語も出てきました。

全体の中でふさわしい位置を定めること。また、その位置。（広辞苑）
確かに、"clinical positioning"のように、"positioning"を「位置付け」と訳しますね。医療機器では、「位置決め」、「配置」や「位置」が多いですが、何かのグループの中での「位置付け」（ランク付けという意味合いもある）という使い方もしますね。
「位置付け」と訳す場合
他分野での「位置付け」の使い方をご紹介します。「位置付け」という単語が出てきて、すぐに浮かんだのが、"Brand Positioning"です。
マーケティング分野では、「ポジショニング」といいます。
顧客や市場に対して、自社の商品やサービスをどのように位置づけるかということになります。競合製品の中での位置や、社内の複数の製品やサービスなど、それぞれの位置づけなどを明確にすることを指します。
例えば、

というふうに使います。

"position" → 「立場」「立ち位置」

I'm not in a position to judge that.
それを判断する立場にはありません。
例えば、すぐに判断できないことで、話し合ってから折り返し連絡したい、というときなどに使えます。
I'm not in a position to make a dicision on that right now, so if you don't mind I'd like to get back to you after I talk with my business partners.
それについてすぐに決定する立場にはありませんので、よろしければ、ビジネスパートナーたちと話し合ってからお返事させてください。
単純に、I can't decide... というと、なぜ決められないのかがはっきりしません。「決定権がない」ということをはっきりさせる自然な表現です。
