“solidification”と”coagulation”、「凝固」の使われ方
１つ前の記事で、骨を含む身体の組織の切断、凝固、止血、またはシールを提供することができる電気外科手術デバイス、について読みました。
「凝固」についていろいろと調べたので、それについて書いてみます。

今回は、「凝固」という意味で、"solidification"と"coagulation"の２つの単語についての考察をしてみます。

自分のノートには、"freezing"と書いてありますが、"solidification"も使います。

医薬、生理学の分野で使われます。
"blood coagulation"または、"blood clotting"といって、「血液凝固」という意味でよく使われます。
液体がジェル状や固体に変化する過程のことをいいます。
「凝固」を使った英語の例文
どの辞書を引いても、"solidification"も"coagulation"も、「凝固」と出てきます。
じゃあ、「凝固」とは何でしょう？
つまりは、液体から固体に変わる現象のことです。英語では、”freezing"や"solidification"といいます。"solidification"＝「固化」ということもあります。

"solidification"は、水が氷になるとき、雪、ろうそく、溶岩、金属などが凝固するときに使われます。
上記の３つ目の例にある、 "congealing"の名詞は"congelation"。
ライフサイエンス辞書では、「凝結」とあります。
化学で、「凝結」が出てきたときに、"congelation"は出てこなかったので、これは別記事で
まとめることにします。
「凝固」や「固化」の例【英語で、coagulationを使う場合】

上記の例をみると、メディカル分野のことだけでなく、ヨーグルトやジャムなどのジェル状の食べ物にも使われていますね。食べ物と凝固の関係でピンとくるのは、豆腐ですね。豆腐には、凝固剤が使われていて、凝固剤には全部で6種類あるんだそうです。

検索結果からも、医療分野では、"coagulation"や"coagulate"を、血液やタンパク質の凝固に使うことが分かります。

まとめ
日本語では「凝固」とあっても、英語では「凝固」するものによって単語が違います。
"solidification"は、水が氷になること、雪、ロウソクや油脂が固まること、溶岩や金属が固まること、などに使います。
"coagulation"は、血液、タンパク質、ペクチン、などが凝固するときに使います。
